Design & Innovation in London
by Saskia Hinger
Who am I?
I believe that in live you should do what you are passionate about. For me the passion that has accompanied me for my whole life is art, design and culture. This is the reason why I decided to deepen my knowledge in the design area by joining the MA course Design Management and Cultures at LCC in September 2018.

As a child I started drawing and painting and I was always convinced that I should find a job in a creative industry. When I got the chance after school to participate in a work and study program for my bachelor's degree in cooperation with the design furniture company Vitra, Germany, I decided to join immediately, because I wanted to be part of this engaging and creative atmosphere. The study programme “International Business” entirely taught in English balanced courses at the Cooperative State University Loerrach, Germany, to the subject of business administration with an international focus with work experience in different departments of the training company. At university I especially deepened my knowledge in marketing through the elective “International Marketing”.
My desire to work creatively and combine this with my analytical skills as well as my passion for the design encouraged me to support the product management team during two practical phases of the bachelor study programme and to write my bachelor thesis in the area of upholstery trend research. In this project I developed a theoretical approach of trend structuring and selection as well as a tool to evaluate the options to take a realistic implementation decision. As part of the bachelor thesis I applied the process and tool practically as well and derived a portfolio development recommendation.

The Product, Innovation and Design department offered me a job as Junior Product Manager and later as Product Manager after my graduation in 2016. In this position I took over various tasks. As part of an interdisciplinary team I supported the development process of new furniture pieces, mainly by building the bridge between the design and engineering team, marketing and sales. This included the analysis of the current portfolio and identification of portfolio development needs, evaluation of the profitability of the business case and presentation of the portfolio proposal to the CDO. Furthermore I prepared the marketing material content and pricing and I planned and conducted sales trainings.
On a more strategic level I supported the Product Life Cycle Management with the preparation of the yearly analysis of the whole product portfolio, which also entailed in-depth analysis of the products in my area of responsibility and the coordination of the input of my colleagues.
Furthermore I supported the implementation of a new Excel-based reporting tool in the department by leading the exchange with the IT department, developing standardised monthly reports and templates for the team and conducting trainings for the product management team.

While working in the product management I realised my strong wish to deepen my knowledge in the field of design management, as my experience has revealed that the development of a successful design requires a well-structured research approach as well as a deeper understanding of trends and innovation possibilities.
With my studies in the field of Design Management and Cultures I am working on personal growth, my strategic skills, I want to gain in-depth knowledge of the creative industries and foster my own creativity.
