How do you approach design challenges?

The subject of my unit of Design Leadership and Cultures this term is the question of how to approach design challenges. The learning of these classes is based on a ‘learning by doing’ approach. Lectures provide theoretical basics and with a practical group project theory is applied and experience gained. In these blog posts I would like to share my main theoretical learnings and conclusions from the project work each week.

The whole process will be accompanied by my lecturers and mentors Leslie Crombie and Sara Eckenger.

Our project team consists of five people from all over the world – Peru, Indonesia, China and Germany – and various professional backgrounds and experiences, which provides diverse points of view and ideas to the topic of our challenge.

So, what challenge will we deal with in our practical project?

Sea turtle and plastic bag (Avaaz.org, 2018)

Our team will work on the development of a social awareness campaign addressing the harm of plastic usage to the oceans and sea creatures and the consequences for human beings. The aim is not to raise awareness only, but to trigger actions to create change. By now, the outcome is still open-ended. I am excited to see how we will come up with a solution for this challenge by applying design thinking methods.
